The Invasion of Japan: An Alternative to the Bomb

I haven't yet read this book myself. I understand that the book contains quite a lot of information about the invasion plans, and this is the main focus of much of the text. I also understand that Skates' position is that Japan was already effectively defeated by blockade and conventional bombing, surrender was likely, and that an invasion would not have resulted in the bloodbath with millions of casualties that some people claim. On this basis, I believe the author therefore concludes that invasion was preferable to the atomic bombs.

There are therefore (in my opinion) at least two reasons why you might want to buy this book:
  1. If you believe that the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was better than the alternatives, you may want to read this book to at least hear the other side of the argument.

  2. From what I understand, this books does contain quite a lot of details about the invasion plans. So, if that subject interests you, then I expect you will want to read for that reason.
